San Diego Creek/Newport
Bay Toxics TMDL |
On June 14, 2002, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
established the Toxics TMDL for San Diego Creek/Newport Bay. The
EPA promulgated TMDL covers 14 different constituents – chlorpyrifos
and diazinon (organophosphate pesticides); chlordane, dieldrin,
DDT, PCBs, and toxaphene (organochlorinated compounds); cadmium,
copper, lead and zinc (metals); selenium; chromium and mercury
(metals, specific to Rhine Channel only).
The table below lists the pollutants and the geographical areas
to which the TMDL applies within the San Diego Creek/Newport Bay
watersheds:

The Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board is in the process of reviewing
the EPA promulgated Toxics TMDL and has decided to break it down into five separate
constituent and geographically specific TMDLs. The five resulting TMDLs will
include:
- Organophosphate Pesticides (diazinon and chlorpyrifos);
- Selenium;
- Organochlorinated Compounds (chlordane, dieldrin, DDT, PCBs, toxaphene);
- Metals
(cadmium, copper, lead, zinc); and
- Rhine Channel (copper, lead, selenium,
zinc, chromium, mercury).
Each of these individual TMDLs must proceed through the full State approval
process before they are officially adopted. Currently, the only TMDL to begin
the State approval process is the diazinon and chlorpyrifos TMDL.
