1) Task 1, Project Management and
Administration (Ongoing)
2) Task 2, Assemble a Technical Advisory Committee (Ongoing)
3) Task 3, Bacteriological Survey of Watershed and Adjacent
Beach Recreational Water. "Bacteriological Survey of San Juan Creek Watershed"
report, which contains methods, sampling plan, results and conclusions, is attached.
1) Task 4, Detailed Bacteriological Survey of Identified Problem
Areas -
Sampling started September 18th. The sampling plan consists of focusing on five
sites:
1) SJ10, Trabuco Creek below Ramos St.
2) SJ6 San Juan Creek above Trabuco Creek
3) SJC2 San Juan Creek at PCH
4) SJ02, San Juan Creek at the beach (behind berm)
5) SJ25, Ocean at San Juan Creek
This plan will allow the subsequent source-tracking portion
of the study to compare the source species of bacterial pollution upstream at two
different creeks vs. the creek mouth at the beach vs. the ocean water. This plan
was discussed with the regional board representative Jeremy Haas on Aug 10. Total
coliform, fecal coliform, enterococcus and E. coli bacteria levels are being quantitated
once a week from each site for 10 weeks. The sampling will be complete November
19.
2) Task 5, Source Identification by ARA and Ribotyping
Sampling started September 18th in conjunction with Task 4. Environmental sample
collection will be complete November 19. Approximately 50% of known species isolates
from human, sewage, cat, dog, horse and seagull have been collected and processed.
Isolates are being forwarded to the three collaborators for ARA analysis (Dr. Harwood)
and Ribotyping (Dr. Lukasik and Dr. Samadpour). Isolation and transportation of
known isolates to collaborators should be complete in December.
